Dysoxylum Pod

The Dysoxylum Pod, the woody fruit capsule of the plant Dysoxylum binectariferum, perfectly represents many of the interesting pods and fruits which fall into tropical streams as part of the "allochthonous input", providing foraging for many species of fishes. These segmented, almost pear-shaped pods are typically split and curved, and vary from individual to individual.

They range in size from about 1.5"(3.81cm) in length, and about 1.25-1.5" (3.17-3.81cm) wide. They have an interesting, woody outer shell and a smooth interior. When placed on the substrate here and there, they really evoke the appearance of a flooded forest floor!

As functional as they are attractive, these pods have a soft interior, which breaks down over time and is much loved by shrimp as a supplemental food! They will also recruit some biofilms on the exterior surfaces. For more on this incredibly useful botanical, check out this recent blog post from "The Tint!"

PREPARATION: You'll have to boil these pods for at least an hour to get them saturated enough to sink. Even longer, sometimes- as they are surprisingly buoyant!
